Book Review : The Mahabharata Code

There are many, who are influenced by Mahabharata, the great epic. So many versions are there. So many tales inspired by it.

This novel is an innovative take inspired by the Mahabharata & how ! The author Karthik B. Rao uses  sarcasm & science to spin this web of a tale !

Narayan Rao or NR ( short for Non Resident ? ) is an astronomer with NASA .NASA wants NR to go on a mission to a planet, from which signals have been received . NR agrees. He meets Vyasa on the planet who claims to be the person, who dictated the epic to Lord Ganesha !  Vyasa wants to recreate the epic, once again, to make believers out of the present generation ! NR though skeptical ,agrees. And then , there is  no looking back. NR's son is taught by Vyasa & he begins to believe that he is  Krishna, the Lord & Arjuna's friend .NR gets discomfortable as he witnesses  the epic unfolding  before his eyes. Krishna rescues people of Gokul by way of holding the spaceship on his fingers. He seems to destroy his enemies through a discus type weapon which resembles sudarshan chakra ! NR gets nervous & cannot understand if he is watching the actual epic or a stage managed one, by the one, who calls himself Vyasa.

NR's wife is Sristhi,a computer programmer .She teaches her son  to operate the spaceship & other finer details. Is she comfortable that her son believes that he is Krishna ? Or is Vyasa using NR's son, for his own grand agenda ? Does the war take place ? And if so , with what consequences ? Is NR'son really the Lord Krishna ? Is Vyasa, who he claims to be ? Is duplicating the epic in the present time, going to make people believers ?

A highly engaging tale narrated with humour & logic ! Like , the bow which was lifted by Arjuna in Draupadi's swayamvar is "the bow is an advanced weapon which is biometrically protected & could be unlocked only if it matched the fingerprints of one of the descendents of the sky gods or, in other words,us the Pandavas ." And this means ,everything was fixed OR was it ? There is a mention, of a brick like device, through which people could communicate even when they are miles away from each other ! The scientific explanation is simply stated making it likeable & believable !

The tale spans different time zones & keeps going to & fro from one zone to another. This makes it all the more appealing to the reader. A must read, to know the probable science behind the epic tale !

THE MAHABHARATA CODE

"The Mahabharata Code is a personal account of the main protagonist Narayan Rao (NR), who claims to be an astronomer with NASA. NR and a few other crew members agree to take part in the NASA mission to visit this mystery planet from which they had received mysterious signals. Here, they meet a man with a long flowing white beard, and he introduces himself as Vyasa. He reveals that he has a crazy plan in mind and seeks NR and his members’ help in implementing this plan. He intends to recreate the entire Mahabharata on this planet to restore the faith of the primitive simpletons here.

As the Mahabharata incidents start unfolding, NR realizes that Vyasa intends to recreate them page by page here, if not paragraph by paragraph. Also NR begins to realize that his son, Krishna, who is being groomed by Vyasa as Vishnu’s avatar, is nothing more than a pawn in Vyasa's scheme of things. Other incidents of Mahabharata also unfold according to the original epic. Pandavas and Kauravas grow up hating each other and finally the restaging plan culminates with both the warring sets of cousins facing each other in the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

Inexplicably, like the original epic, Arjuna develops cold feet seeing his own cousins, teachers and relatives on the opposite side. He seeks Krishna’s divine intervention. Is the brainwashed “alien” Krishna prepared for this intervention?"
